May 17th, 2012 . by adminTURNING A DAY WITHOUT SMOKING INTO A LIFETIME WITH THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT COMING UP, AN EX-SMOKER SHOWS HOW TO QUIT THE HABIT FOR GOOD
Fern Carness smoked two packs a day for more than 10 years, through high school, nursing school and two pregnancies. Now she is using that experience to help others quit smoking. Carness, a Portland resident, knows how hard it is to quit, but she also knows how destructive that cycle can be, not only to a smoker’s health but also to self-esteem. Carness hopes smokers hear that message on Thursday, the American Cancer Society’s 23rd annual Great American Smokeout day.

“I probably smoked even more,” Mary Farnan told a state jury. The 44-year-old north Florida nurse said she knew cigarettes had caused her lung cancer and smoking could make it worse, but she could not stop. “I was addicted,” Farnan said. She finally quit the night before a portion of her left lung was surgically removed. Farnan and Frank Amodeo, a 60-year-old Orlando clockmaker, are the named plaintiffs selected to represent 500,000 other sick Floridians seeking damages from the industry for illnesses that their jury has already said were caused by tobacco products.

May 12th, 2012 . by adminMore surgery for Koivu
Saku Koivu will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder tomorrow morning and will be lost to the Canadiens for at least three weeks. The tear was discovered Monday when Koivu underwent an MRI examination. He met with the team’s medical staff before last night’s game and agreed to undergo surgery. It’s the third time this year Koivu has required medical attention. He broke his hand at the world championships last spring and had surgery during the summer on his left knee. That’s not to say that the Belfast-born [Owen Nolan] doesn’t get his Irish up once in a while. He and Shayne Corson traded punches in the first period. But Nolan showed his kinder, gentler side later in the period when Jeff Hackett wandered out of his crease to corral a loose puck. The tendency this season has been to consider goalies fair game in that situation, but Nolan pulled up and sidestepped the goaltender.

A: There are effects of cigarette smoking that are more immediate and there are other effects that may take years to develop. This means that carbon monoxide (what comes from a car’s exhaust system) replaces some of the oxygen in your blood.

I’m not a smoker, but my wife of 28 years, Jackie, is. She started smoking at age 15 and has smoked for 32 years with two exceptions: She quit for the nine months during the pregnancies of our two children. She was able to quit smoking for 18 months for the health of our children but not for her own health.

SUCH ARE THE VAGARIES OF CELEBRITY CULTURE THAT ALMOST EVERY PERSON – and thing – associated with the fashion industry has become a star. Manolo Blahnik, the Geppetto of stilettos, is a celeb, and so are his shoes. Even makeup artists and the powders, tubes, and glosses they use have achieved bold-faced status. Today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Filene’s fetes magazine darling Mary Greenwell, makeup artist to Amber Valletta, Uma Thurman, Naomi Campbell, and their ilk. She’ll not only push Elizabeth Arden’s new lipstick but share holiday makeup tips (“shimmering skin, smoky eyes, and pouty red lips”). If that doesn’t interest you, just stick with Go!’s signature holiday look (smoky hair, pouty red eyes, and pasty skin), take all the money you would have spent on cosmetics, and blow it at Foxwoods. Cheers. %BC% Fresh squeezed %EC% Under French law, a new vintage cannot be slurped, gulped, even sipped before midnight on the third Thursday of November. So the good Francophiles over at Brasserie Jo thought a midnight party tonight would be a perfectly official time to sample the new 1999 Beaujolais nouveau. And what a little fete it will be! They’re trucking in Marie Antoinette (God only knows how she looks these days) to decree that the wine may be imbibed officially. And, of course, there will be cake. The party starts at 11 p.m. A $5 donation goes to the French Library and Cultural Center. %BC% Butt out %EC% Ever since Go! dedicated our life to the pursuit of the uber-chic, we had to quit smoking. Yes, a few times a year we cheat and have a puff, but that’s it. No more reeking sweaters, no more facial collagen breakdown, no more mouth like the inside of our old Steve Maddens. Overall, we highly recommend quitting, but it’s not easy. Today being the Great American Smoke Out, you’ll get a little help. Trot over to the Somerville Theatre at 7 for the free Butt Out Concert, featuring Granian, Tracy Rose, Jamie and Jon, and a whole bunch of other performers we haven’t heard of, as they come out and support a very good cause.
